Portrait of a Colony
An important aspect of science is engaging others in the research being done and increasing understanding of a subject. Working in a museum environment where our work is always up for display, we wanted to look at how we could better engage the public. We decided on framing the substance of our research as an "art piece".
We are interested in looking at the facial patterns and ridges on the faces of ants. How do these vary across species, between members of a colony and what are their functions?
To find differences and similarities in facial structure, pictures were taken of different individuals within the same colony. Ants within a colony are genetically identical due to the queen laying all of the eggs.
Top Row: Gynes; winged females who have the potential to become queens after a mating flight.
Middle Row: Female workers
